AIZAWL, Nov 8: Mizoram Taxation Minister Lalsawta today said that the State Government was reeling under acute financial crisis as the Centre had released less than 50 per cent of the allocated funds since the implementation of Goods and Services Tax in July. Lalsawta attributed poor internet connectivity to the inefficient implementation of the new tax regime. An emergency meeting of top officials of the State Taxation and Finance departments was chaired by the Minister here today. According to Lalswata, the State would face further problems if it revised the salaries of the Government employees in line with the recommendations of the 7th Pay Commission. The implementation of the panel’s recommendations would entail an additional expenditure of Rs 800 crore annually, he added. PTI

AIZAWL, NOV 7: Leaders of all Hmar tribe will hold a consultative meeting under the aegis of Hmar Inpui, an apex body of the Hmar tribe over the draft Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) between the Mizoram Government and Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic), who are currently engaging in a series of peace talks to find an amicable solution to the Hmar political issue. The meeting would be held at Sakawrdai, the proposed headquarters of Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) in Hmar dominated north Mizoram on November 8 in the presence of HPC(D) leaders. 13 leaders of Hmar Inpui from Manipur and Meghalaya led by its president Joseph Lalrothang arrived in Aizawl for the said consultative meeting.

The Hmar apex body in its statement has invited representatives of all Hmar ethnic based civil society organisations, Hmar Students’ Association, all villages of the proposed SHC area and volunteers of the erstwhile Hmar People’s Convention (HPC) to attend the meeting to be held under the chairmanship of Hmar Inpui general headquarters president, Joseph Lalrothanga. Speaking to Newmai News Network, Lalrothang said the meeting would deliberate and review drafts of MoS and SHC Bill. He also said that the meeting has been convened to hold consultative meetings of Hmar leaders under the aegis of Hmar Inpui over the drafts. He added that any suggestion and improvement made at the meeting over the draft MoS and SHC Bill will be tabled by HPC(D) delegates for ratification at the proposed political level talks between the State Government of Mizoram and the Hmar outfit probably to be held next month. The peace talks between the Mizoram Government and HPC (D) were revived in August last year. -NEWMAI NEWS

AIZAWL, Nov 7: The Archeological Survey of India (ASI) will start exploration on an ancient site at Vangchhia village in eastern Mizoram. INTACH Mizoram chapter convener P Rohmingthanga said Dr Sujeet Nayan, has been issued licence for exploration and excavation of the site. Exploration will start in mid-December this year and excavation will start from the first week of January, 2017. at Vangchhia, Rohmingthanga said. Vangchhia, a sleepy village in Champhai district bordering Myanmar, is home to mysterious megalithic structures that have long captured the imagination of archaeologists. Experts believe these structures could throw light on the existence of one of the world’s largest necropolises or hold clues to a greater civilization that may have existed on this side of the world. Rohmingthanga said the ASI will explore other potential sites over an area of 10 to 12 square km in the deep jungles of Champhai. The team will assess if the new proposed sites are connected to one another and related to Vangchhia.

Dr Nayan has stated that he had discovered incredible necropolis (burial site) archeological sites during his tour to Vangchhia, Champhai district, in 2016 soon after getting licence from the then ASI Director General Dr Rakesh Tewari. Licence for excavation at Vangchhia and exploration in and around Vangchhia has been issued to Nayan as director with Lalrinchhani, assistant archaeologist of Aizawl circle as co-director. With the expanded licence, the chapter hopes that excavation at other sites in Champhai such as Dungtlang, Ngur, etc will be initiated, Rohmingthanga said. He said renewed efforts to expedite notification of the four megalithic sites as national importance at Farkawn, Dungtlang, Lianpui and Lungphunlian village, pursued by the chapter since a long time and also taken up with the Union Minister for Culture, Dr Mahesh Sharma. -Assam Tribune
