AIZAWL, July 8: To counter the Mizoram Tipper Association’s (MTA) blockade against ‘outsider trucks’, Silchar-based Forum for Protection of NonMizos has decided to impose an indefinite blockade on National Highway 54, the main economic lifeline of the State.
MTA, an umbrella organisation for tipper truck operators in Mizoram, launched a blockade against trucks operated by non-Mizos outside the State, prohibiting them from entering Mizoram since July 8, in protest against alleged registration of non-tribal trucks in the tribal State. MTA president Lalzarmawia alleged that nearly 50 commercial vehicles (trucks) owned by non-indigenous people who are “outsiders”, have been registered in Mizoram in violation of the Central Motor Vehicle Rules, 1989.
“As per the rules, owners of commercial vehicles are not allowed to register outside their domicile State or without valid documents. The non-tribal truck owners have violated the Eastern Bengal Frontier Regulation, 1873, and worked beyond the subjects permitted by Inner Line Permit (ILP),” he said and demanded the Mizoram Government to annul such “illegal registration.”
According to MTA, about 100 trucks from outside Mizoram are currently operating in the State. Defying the blockade, about 18 trucks from Lailapur and Bagha in Cachar district, carrying bricks and sand entered Mizoram on Friday night. These trucks were pushed back from Kolasib town in northern Mizoram by MTA members. It was after this incident that Forum for Protection of NonMizos announced its decision to blockade the National Highway. - Correspondent, Assam Tribune
