AIZAWL, Feb 16: Mizoram
PWD Minister Lal Thanzara
today said he was ready to resign,
in a sharp response to opposition
parties’ demand for his
resignation over the collapse of
the under construction Bailey
bridge that killed one person and
injured another on February 13.
Terming the disaster as a
“misfortune,” Lal Thanzara said,
“As a Minister for PWD, I own
moral responsibility.
I have informed
the Home Minister, who
is taking the charge of Chief
Minister, and the secretary of
Congress Legislature Party of
my willingness to submit my
resignation. They would not accept
my resignation and the people
who elected me don’t want
me to resign.”
Lal Thanzara was speaking
at a Congress political session
at Congress Bhavan here.
The construction of the bridge
across Tuirini river to connect
villages in northeastern parts of
Mizoram was almost complete.
The mishap took place when two
men of Sesawng village, were
walking on it. While one lost his
life, the other was injured.
The Minister said reconstruction
works would commence
soon in order to complete it
before the onset of monsoon.
“The Finance Minister has
sanctioned Rs 2 crore for reconstruction
of the bridge,” he
said. – Correspondent, Assam Tribune
