Lalnghinglova HmarAIZAWL, March 14: Two main opposition parties in Mizoram – Congress and Zoram People’s Movement – today fielded a young leader Lalnghinglova ‘Tetea’ Hmar as its common candidate for the election to the lone Lok Sabha seat in Mizoram to be held on April 11. Congress and ZPM had on March 12 made an agreement to field a common candidate for the Lok Sabha and bye-election to Aizawl West-I Assembly seat to be held simultaneously.

Lalbuanga Sailo, a retired government official, is the combined force’s nominee for the bye-election, necessitated by the resignation of ZPM leader Lalduhoma, who also got elected from Serchhip seat in the November 2018 Assembly elections. Congress-ZPM combined candidate will use a triangle as his symbol.

The main reason behind forming the electoral alliance is to “take on the Hindutva force” and to keep the BJP-led NDA at bay thus preventing the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) from getting a passage in the Parliament. Announcing the candidatures of Hmar and Sailo, ZPM leader K Sapdanga said that the ZPM and Congress party which had fought stiff electoral battle during the election to the 40-member State Assembly on November 28, has come together on a common platform – to defeat the BJP and its allies in the State. Sapdanga alleged that the BJP has been having a hidden agenda to make India a Hindu State and to wipe out Christians from the face of India.

He also said that the proposed CAB, if legislated by the Parliament would result in the assimilation of the Mizos by illegal infiltrators from Bangladesh. Lalnghinglova, 42, is a wellknown sports journalist and presently honorary secretary of the Mizoram Football Association (MFA). He is currently joint editor of Vanglaini, the largest circulated vernacular daily in Mizoram.

The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) had already announced yesterday that former Director General of Doordarshan C Lalrosanga and former student leader Zothantluanga would be the party’s nominees for the Lok Sabha and Assembly by-polls respectively. ~ Assam Tribune
