AIZAWL, April 8: Former
Mizoram Assembly Speaker and
ex-Rajya Sabha ember Hiphei
died at a hospital here this morning.
He was 82 and is survived
by his wife and two children.
Born in 1937 at Chapui village
in Siaha district, Hiphei entered
politics in the early 1960s.
He
was elected to the Mizoram UT
Assembly from Tuipang (now
Palak) constituency and was
made the Speaker of the Assembly.
He got elected seven times
from the same seat between
1972 and 2013.
He was also elected to the
Rajya Sabha for two consecutive terms from 1990 to 2002.
He served as the Speaker of
the Assembly during the tenure of the Congress Government from 2013 to 2018. He
resigned from the post of
Speaker and quit the Congress
before the 2018 elections to
join the BJP, and unsuccessfully contested from Palak constituency on a BJP ticket.

Sreedharan Pillai has condoled
his demise. “During his long
and illustrious years of public
service, including his stints as a
member of the Rajya Sabha, he
was a constant beacon that people could depend upon even in
the times of darkness.
A champion of value-based politics, he
was a classic example of a person with a difference – an ideal
public worker. ...he stood for
the cause of the nation as well,”
the Governor said.
