Mizoram announces Rs 20 lakh for volunteers who die of COVID-19

Mizoram exgratia covid19

AIZAWL, April 7: The Mizoram Government has decided to pay an ex gratia of Rs 20 lakh each to the families of local volunteers engaged in COVID-19 duty if they die of the viral infection, an official release stated today.

This was approved by the Council of Ministers at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Zoramthanga on Tuesday.

Following the outbreak of COVID-19 last year, the Mizoram Government had set up Village Level Local Task Forces (VLTF) for villages and Local Level Task Forces for urban areas to check the spread of the virus.

These voluntary task forces helped the State Government to a great extent in containing the spread of COVID-19.

The announcement came at a time when a second wave of COVID-19 is looming large over Mizoram.

Mizoram today reported eight new cases of COVID-19, taking the State’s tally to 4,508. Of the new cases, six were reported from Aizawl district and two from Kolasib district.

The new patients include two children aged three and 11, who contracted the disease after coming into contact with infected persons.

Four of the new patients returned from outside Mizoram, while the remaining four do not have any travel history.

Three of a family are among the new patients and the head of the family is the manager of a hotel in Aizawl.

The eight new cases were detected from 1,149 samples tested on Tuesday.

Mizoram currently has 50 active cases, including 39 in Aizawl, six in Kolasib, three in Hnahthial and two in Champhai.

While 4,447 patients have recovered from the disease, 11 have succumbed to it in the State. - Assam Tribune
