Image result for mizoram universityAIZAWL, Sept 7: As students’ strike in Mizoram University demanding appointment of a regular Vice Chancellor entered the second day, State Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla today appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to appoint the VC quickly in the Central University. The CM said he had already written to Modi on May 6, 2016 and the HRD Minister informed him that the process of VC selection was taken up afresh.

“It is now more than a year since then and I am given to understand that the file is currently lying with the present Union HRD Minister for a couple of months at his desk,” he said to the PM in a letter. Since yesterday, the students were boycotting classes and preventing teachers and nonteaching staff from entering the campus, the Chief Minister said. As it is the only Central University in the State, prolonged delay in the appointment of VC would jeopardise the future of many students, he said. Meanwhile, Mizoram University Student Council continued boycotting classes. The University had been without a regular VC for almost two years. – PTI

Image result for oilAIZAWL, Sept 7: Oil India Limited (OIL) is highly optimistic of finding hydrocarbon deposits, specially natural gas in Mizoram, company’s chief manager for exploration R Phukan today said. “We found good quality natural gas deposit in Maubuang area, but the quantity was not feasible for commercial purposes,” he told media persons here. Drilling was done at Maubuang, which is around 40 km south of Aizawl and at Keifang area in eastern Aizawl district and did not yield any positive results. Drilling in central Mizoram’s Thenzawl area would commence soon and OIL is highly optimistic of finding hydrocarbon deposits in the area, he added. – PTI

Image result for mizoram universityAIZAWL, Sept 6: Students of Mizoram University intensified their long-standing demand for a regular Vice Chancellor by picketing in front of the University. In a letter faxed to Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar on August 28, the Mizoram University Students’ Council (MZUSC) had set a deadline of September 5 to appoint a regular VC failing which the students’ council will boycott all academic and non-academic activities. MZUSC said that the Mizoram University has been without regular VC for almost two years and a number of requests had been made to the authorities by the students as well as the teachers’ association for immediate appointment of a regular VC which were unheeded by the Centre. “Our repeated pleas to the Central Government to appoint a regular VC for Mizoram University have fallen on deaf ears.
The Central Government’s indifference towards our needs is an insult not only to the teachers and students of Mizoram, but to the entire people of the State,” said Laltleipuia Hmar, joint secretary of MZUSC.
