AIZAWL, Aug 28: Anti-corruption watchdog-turned political party PRISM today accused Mizoram Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla of telling an outright lie when he claimed that his government had punished 1,500 people involved in corruption. The lies told by the Chief Minister has been confirmed by his partys media department, PRISM said in a statement. PRISM said the CMs bold statement came as an welcome news for the organisation that has been fighting against corruption for the last ten years. It immediately filed RTI queries with CMO office to get details about the convicted individuals. As the CMO could not furnish any information, it referred our RTI queries to Vigilance department.
The Vigilance department also could not give us the names of individuals who were claimed to be punished, the PRISM statement said. Coming to the CMs rescue, the Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committees Communication department issued a statement saying that 1,965 individuals have been given disciplinary action under Central Civil Service (Classification, Control and Appeal) Rules. It is now clear that whereas corruption is a crime, those found guilty should be punished under the Prevention of Corruption Act, the Lal Thanhawla Government has given a mere disciplinary action against corrupt officials, which shows the governments lack of interest in rooting out corruption, its proclaimed agenda, the PRISM statement added.
