AIZAWL, Dec 11: Hundreds
of activists of Mizo Zirlai
Pawl, Mizoram’s apex students’
body, has left here for
Chakma dominated areas in
southern part of the State to
carry out maintenance works
on Mizo Chawlhbuk (Mizo
rest house) at Borapansury
village near the Indo-Bangladesh
border.
MZP president L Ramdinliana
Renthlei said besides
maintaining Mizo Chawlhbuk,
they would check illegal settlements
under Chakma autonomous
district council.
“We have evidences that
Chakmas from Bangladesh illegally
migrated to Mizoram
and set up villages. We will
find out such illegal villages
and report them to the authorities,”
Renthlei said.
The MZP had constructed
the Mizo Chawlhbuk in 2014,
amidst strong opposition from
Chakma organisations. It constructed
the Zofate Chawlhbuk
as a token of protest
against alleged uncontrolled
illegal influx of Chakmas from
neighbouring Bangladesh.
The student leaders said
there were only 198 Chakmas
in Mizoram in the 1911 Census
and the population of the
community has grown to
around one lakh now.
“The population growth of
the Chakma community in
Mizoram is extremely abnormal
indicating massive illegal
immigration from Bangladesh
and the situation has become a
demographic nightmare for
the native Mizo people,” Renthlei
said.
All NGOs and political parties
of Chakma community had
protested the construction and
had even boycotted the byeelection
to Borapansury seat
in Chakma Autonomous District
Council that year.-Assam Tribune
