Foundation stone of cancer centre laid in Mizoram

Mizoram State Cancer Institute AIZAWL, Jan 24: Union Minister of Health and Family welfare J P Nadda laid the foundation stone of Tertiary Care Cancer Centre (TCCC) at Mizoram State Cancer Institute, Aizawl. The centre will be established at a cost of Rs 45 crore to provide comprehensive cancer care which includes cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis, treatment, after- care, palliative care and rehabilitation, an official statement said. 

“There are around 38 lakh cases of cancer in India and about 14.5 lakh new cases occur every year. Nearly 6-7 lakh patients die due to the disease each year,” Nadda said in his address. “About two-thirds of the cancer patients are diagnosed at the advanced stage. Cancer can be controlled, if diagnosed well in time. Some cancers can be prevented and others, if detected well in time, can be treated. About onethird of all cancers are related to tobacco which can be prevented,” he said. Nadda informed that 20 State Cancer Institutes (SCIs) and 50 Tertiary Care Cancer Centers (TCCCs) are being set up for providing comprehensive cancer care. Four TCCCs and two State Cancer Institute (SCIs) have been approved in the north-eastern region. 


The minister further said in order to provide relief to the poor people due to rising cost of cancer drugs, the Central Government has also started AMRIT scheme (Affordable Medicines and Reliable Implants for Treatment). “Medicines for treatment of cancer are being made available at discount rates. 108 such outlets have already been started,” he said. He added that drugs worth more than Rs 469 crore have already been sold with Rs 258 crore savings to patients.-Assam Tribune
