This was disclosed by Manipur Horticulture and Soil Conservation Minister Thounaojam Shyamkumar Singh while responding to observations by Opposition MLAs during a discussion in the state Assembly. Minister Shyamkumar was particularly reacting to the observation made by congress MLA Dr Chaltonlien Amo of Tipaimukh constituency over the lack of transportation facilities etc despite large scale production of ginger in Pherzawl district. “We have taken steps to promote ginger cultivation in the state”, the Minister said.

The state has been observing orange festival in Tamenglong, lemon festival in Kachai (Ukhrul), pineapple festival at Andro in Imphal East. Shyamkumar also informed that the department has a plan to introduce quinoa in place of poppy plants in the interior areas of the state. Quinoa is said to be a flowering plant used for its edible seeds. However, he did not elaborate on it.

He also assured that the department is planning to introduce soil testing facility from the current financial year in the state besides taking up steps to construct cold storages and opening up of other organic vegetable outlets in the market areas.-Assam Tribune
