IMPHAL, Feb 27: In order to promote
ginger production in the state,
the first-ever ginger festival will be
held in Pherzawl district in March
this year.
This was disclosed by Manipur
Horticulture and Soil Conservation
Minister Thounaojam Shyamkumar
Singh while responding to observations
by Opposition MLAs during a
discussion in the state Assembly.
Minister Shyamkumar was particularly
reacting to the observation
made by congress MLA Dr Chaltonlien
Amo of Tipaimukh constituency
over the lack of transportation facilities
etc despite large scale production
of ginger in Pherzawl district.
“We have taken steps to promote ginger cultivation in the state”, the
Minister said.
The state has been
observing orange festival in Tamenglong,
lemon festival in Kachai
(Ukhrul), pineapple festival at Andro
in Imphal East.
Shyamkumar also informed that
the department has a plan to introduce
quinoa in place of poppy plants
in the interior areas of the state.
Quinoa is said to be a flowering plant
used for its edible seeds. However,
he did not elaborate on it.
He also assured that the department
is planning to introduce soil
testing facility from the current financial
year in the state besides taking
up steps to construct cold storages
and opening up of other organic
vegetable outlets in the market
