AIZAWL, March 14: The
tension along Assam-Mizoram
border have died down
after Mizo Zirlai Pawl, State’s
apex student body, decided to
suspend construction of a rest
shed at Zophai near the border
town of Bairabi.
The decision was made at
the organisation’s emergent
meeting held in Aizawl late on
Tuesday night, amidst escalating
tensions.
MZP made the decision after
fervent appeals from Mizoram
Kohhran Hruaitute
Committee, a conglomeration
of church leaders and Central
Young Mizo Association, the
largest non-governmental organisation
in Mizoram, MZP
general secretary Lalnunmawia
Pautu said.
Tension had escalated on Tuesday
as MZP looked determined
to go ahead with its plan to construct
a rest shed at Zophai.
Union Ministry of Home Affairs
(MHA) has convened a
meeting of the Chief Secretaries
of Mizoram and Assam
next week to resume dialogue
on the boundary dispute between
the two States in the
wake of protests by students
which turned violent recently.
This was conveyed by Union
Home Minister Rajnath
Singh to Mizoram Chief Minister
Lal Thanhawla, who had
approached him seeking his
intervention in the ongoing
boundary dispute between
Mizoram and Assam by resuming
the talks and ensuring
peace along the border.
The Home Ministry also
told the State Governments
to enforce prohibitory orders
and deploy forces wherever
necessary.
Both the district magistrates
of Kolasib, under whose jurisdiction
falls the disputed area,
and Aizawl district on Tuesday
clamped CrPC 144 in the respective
districts.
Early on Tuesday night,
many panic stricken non-tribals
living in the State were
leaving Mizoram. - Assam Tribune
