Press ReleaseMarch 14, 2018
The recent bedlam that occurred along the Mizoram-Assam border is too disheartening to learn. At least 49 students of Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP) were hurt in the disorderly situation where the security personnel used lathi (cane) to charge these peaceful protestors as well as few journalists.
The Gangte Students’ Organisation, General Headquarters expresses its heartfelt discontentment over the issue and reprimands the unrefined act of the Assam Police against the peaceful protestors. The student body wondered why excessive and brutal forces were spent on the peaceful demonstrators who were mostly students. This undemocratic action perpetrated by the guardians of law is uncalled for, and the perpetrators of this atrocious crime should be punished according to the law of the land. The situation could have been controlled without violence.
In this regard, Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba has convened a meeting of the chief secretaries of Mizoram and Assam on March 20 to resume dialogue on the boundary dispute between the two states. We hope this dialogue will bring a peaceful solution to both sides at the earliest.
We also express our deep sympathy to the victims and bear the same grief while stating that we will join hands with our Mizo brethren and stand for our rights so that justice shall prevail.
David Letgoulien Gangte,
General Secretary,
GSO-GHQ
