Mizoram and HPC(D) reach landmark agreement

AIZAWL, March 8: Mizoram Government and Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic), the Hmar ethnic armed group fighting for autonomy since 1994, have finally reached a landmark agreement to put an end to more than a threedecade old stalemate on the Hmar political imbroglio. The agreement was reached between the two sides during the “political level talks” held here on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters, Lalrinmawia Ralte, Political Adviser to Mizoram CM, who headed the government delegation, said both sides have unanimously agreed to sign the Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) based on the framework of agreement made earlier. He also said the peace accord between the two sides will be inked very soon and the “peace resolution” will be referred by both sides to the State Government who will decide on the date for signing peace accord and laying down of arms. Asked about the terms of the agreement, Ralte said that it cannot be revealed at this juncture.

HPC(D) spokesperson Lalthalien exuded happiness for the “positive outcome” of the peace parleys that an agreement will be finally signed after two decades of arm struggle.
