AIZAWL, April 29: In a rat race for
power, both Mizo National Front (MNF)
and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), who had
initially planned to form a coalition, have
separately staked claim to form the government
in the hotly-contested Chakma
Autonomous District Council (CADC).
On Saturday, the eight elected MNF
councillors led by Rashik Mohan Chakma,
met the Governor staking claim to form
the government, making it a point that
MNF was the single largest party with
eight MDCs (members of district council).
Talking to reporters, MNF legislature
party leader R M Chakma said, “We met
the Governor and handed him a letter
seeking his invitation to the single largest
party to be called first to form the
government as per convention.”
RM Chakma was confident of forming
the government with some councillors
who were elected on BJP and MNF tickets.
The minimum number of forming
the government is 11 in the 20-seat Chakma
ADC.
Earlier, BJP had also requested the
Governor to invite the party to form the
government. “We are awaiting the Governor’s
response,” State BJP president
Prof JV Hluna said.
The BJP won five seats in CADC
elections that threw up a fractured
mandate. The Congress won seven, including
one seat which was stayed by
Gauhati High Court.
Hluna said a BJP-led joint legislature
party has been formed. “Both Congress
and MNF councillors are invited to join
the legislature party,” he added.
Elections to Chakma Autonomous District
Council (CADC) have never made
it to the national headlines like this time.
This too for all the wrong reasons.
The CADC post-election episode has
drawn national media’s interest because
Congress and BJP, which are sworn enemies
in Indian politics, decided to form an
alliance for power in the Chakma Council.
BJP and Congress decided to join hands
after the recently held elections to
CADC threw a fractured mandate. In the
20-member CADC, the Congress has
emerged as the second largest party with
six seats, while BJP came third with five
seats.
The largest party with eight seats
in CADC is Mizo National Front (MNF).
The dramatic development came a few
hours after BJP national president Amit
Shah tweeted that BJP and MNF, its ally
in North East Democratic Front, would
form the executive council.-Assam Tribune
