IMPHAL, May 21: Kakching,
an urban centre in Manipur’s
Kakching district has
been declared the cleanest
town (urban) in Northeastern
region under Swachh Bharat
Mission conducted by Union
Ministry of Housing and Urban
Affairs.
Mayang Imphal, another
small commercial hub in Imphal
West district has also
come out top in the Best City
in Citizens’ Feedback in North
East, according to State Mission
Director of Swachh
Bharat Mission (Urban), Nepram
Gitkumar.
Kakching will now receive
the title of Cleanest Town in
NE and Mayang Imphal the
Best City in Citizens’ Feedback
in NE under Swachh
Bharat Mission. Kakching
came out top in a comparative
study of 4,041 towns across the
country while there were 164
towns from NE.
Of the four categories of
awards for NE zone, two were
bagged by Manipur.
The award for Best City ‘on
Solid Waste Management’
went to Rangpo town in Sikkim.
An agency appointed by
the Ministry inspected the
4,041 towns from January 4 till
March 10, 2018 and carried out
a comparative study. An important
indicator taken into account
while carrying out the comparative
study was to see if the
area or town is open defecation
free and disposal of garbage
generated by the town.
In December 2017, Imphal
Municipal Council and Gangtok
Municipal Corporation
along with 18 municipalities
from 11 other Indian States
joined hands and floated a ‘Forum
of Cities that Segregate’.
The Forum’s 2018 Conclave is
scheduled to be held in Delhi
on June 7.
