AIZAWL, July 22: Mizoram has completed 76 per cent works in the ambitious Kaladan multi modal transit transport project (KMMTTP), Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla said while delivering a speech at the 10th edition of Delhi Dialogue in New Delhi on Friday. The theme of this year’s Delhi Dialogue is “Strengthening IndiaASEAN Maritime Co-operation”. Of the total 893.18 km road in the Kaladan project, Mizoram Public Works Department is to construct 87.18 km, from Lawngtlai town in southern Mizoram to Zorinpui at Myanmar border.

Once completed, the project will help connect Mizoram with Sittwe Port in Rakhine State of Myanmar. Launched in 2009 by UPA as part of its ‘Look East’ policy and now being pushed under the NDA’s ‘Act East’ programme, the overall KMMTTP project entails the following: building the 90- km NH 502A to Indo-Myanmar border; constructing a 140-km highway from there to Paletwa town in Myanmar; developing a river port at Paletwa on Kaladan river, and connecting it via a 160-km waterway to Sittwe; and constructing a deep water port at Sittwe to facilitate a sea route to Kolkata’s Haldia port, roughly 540 km away.

The project will bring Mizoram closer to Kolkata by more than 1,000 km. Lal Thanhawla expressed hope that the Act East Policy will immensely boost the economy of Northeastern region, particularly Mizoram. Mizoram CM also stressed the need to reinforce land customs station at Zokhawthar. He informed the meeting that the road from Aizawl to Zokhawthar border point is being constructed by World Bank.

He also pointed out that Kawrpuichhuah Integrated Check Post (ICP) at India-Bangladesh border in south-western Mizoram is yet to be commissioned, and urged the Land Port Authority of India to take expeditious steps for its completion. -Assam Tribune Correspondent
