AIZAWL, Feb 22: Nearly
seven years after the Election
Commission introduced ‘others’ gender option, six transgenders have registered for
the first time in the Mizoram
electoral rolls for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, published by the State Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) today.
There is a total of 7,84,405
voters in Mizoram, including
4,02,408 females, 3,81,991
males and six transgenders, or
‘third genders’ as officials put it.
CEO Ashish Kundra said
this is the first time that ‘third
gender’ option is introduced in
Mizoram.
Across India, 28,314 third
genders have enrolled in the
electoral rolls. The enrolment
column depicts “Others” for
transgender category of people apart from the regular options meant for ‘Male’ or ‘Female’ voters. This category
was introduced by EC in 2012.
As usual, female voters outnumber their male counterparts by 20,417, and the sex
ratio is 1053.
The CEO said there are
14,032 new voters. With this,
97 per cent of eligible voters in
Mizoram have been enlisted in
the electoral roll, he said.
The
elector-population ratio is 613.
The CEO also informed that
11 new polling stations have
been introduced, one in Kolasib, three each in Aizawl and
Lunglei and four in Lawngtlai.
He said preparations for the
upcoming Lok Sabha polls have
been kicked off.

Governor Kummanam Rajasekharan today summoned the
Budget session of the State Assembly from March 12, Assembly secretary SR Zokhuma said.
Zokhuma said that the detailed calendar of the coming
session would be finalised by
the meeting of the Business
Advisory Committee (BAC)
chaired by Speaker Lalrinliana
Sailo. The BAC is most likely
to hold a meeting on March 4,
