Mizoram Chief Minister Zoramthanga will attend a
meeting of all chief ministers,
political parties and organisations of the North East on
the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB) in New
Delhi, scheduled on Friday
and Saturday, a Mizo National Front party source said.
However, Zoramthanga,
who addressed party workers here as the newly-elected president of the MNF today, is yet to leave for the
national capital. “He is scheduled to leave for Delhi on Saturday itself,” the source said.
Even though all parties and
major NGOs in Mizoram have
been invited to the meeting
convened by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, most of
them declined the invitation
due to the short notice.
Among the political parties, the BJP and the Zoram
People’s Movement have
sent their representatives.
Mizoram BJP president and
ZPM leader K Sapdanga
reached New Delhi today.
The controversial citizenship Bill has triggered widespread protests in the North
Eastern States.
Meanwhile, the Mizoram
Pradesh Congress Committee organised a demonstration against the proposed Citizenship (Amendment) Bill
here today.
Protesters participating in
the demonstration unanimously observed that the
proposed Bill violates the
sanctity of secularism enshrined in the Constitution of
India. The resolution also
read that grant of citizenship
by virtue of certain religions
is detrimental to religious
minorities of India.
“The CAB will grant citizenship to illegal immigrants
settling in Mizoram and other North Eastern States and
we resolved that the BJP
Government should pull back
the proposed CAB,” the resolution read.
“The entire region of India’s North East has voiced
its protest against the CAB
loudly in our respective
States, the Centre has already heard our pleas and resistance against the Bill, we
demand an exclusion of all
North Eastern States even if
the Bill is passed,” the resolution added. ~Assam Tribune AIZAWL, Nov 29.
