AIZAWL, June 30: Greeting the people on the 34th anniversary
of the Mizo Accord signed between the Indian Government and
the then outlawed Mizo National Front, Chief Minister Zoramthanga today hailed the peace accord as one of the most
historic and successful peace accords ever signed.
“#MizoramPeaceAccord 1986 was signed 34 years ago today.
Peace has come a long way for the Mizos.
Saluting and congratulating everyone on this Remna Ni (Peace Day),” Zoramthanga
tweeted.
Zoramthanga, who was the vice president of the MNF when
the peace accord was signed, also shared old photos of his
guerilla days and the aftermath of the peace accord, on his
Twitter handle.
In his video message aired by local TV channels, the rebelturned-politician said the Mizo Accord was to the satisfaction of
neither the MNF nor the Indian Government at that time.
“It was an outcome of prayers of the people as well as NGOs
and churches. It was the gift of God for our own good,” he said.
Zoramthanga said that the Mizo Accord has stood the test of
time and brought about lasting peace in the State.
Asserting that the accord put to an end two decades of insurgency and unrest in the State, Zoramthanga urged the people to
cherish and safeguard it.
On June 30 in 1986, peace had returned to Mizoram with the
signing of the four-page Mizo Accord in New Delhi under former
Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. The then Union Home Secretary,
RD Pradhan, MNF chief late Laldenga, and former Chief Secretary of the Mizoram Government, Lalkhama, put their initials on
