HAILAKANDI, March 9: The Assam
Police on Thursday afternoon foiled the
bid of about 50 members of Young Mizo
Association (YMA) and Mizo Zirlai Pawl
(MZP) to enter Assam land allegedly in
Kachurthal area of Hailakandi district. It
may be mentioned here that some restrictions
were imposed under Section
144 of CrPC as precautionary measure
in the area by the Deputy Commissioner
of Hailakandi.
All the top civil and police officials
were stationed at Kachurthal on Thursday
following the threat of both the organizations
to reconstruct the waiting
shed. Police resorted to lathicharge
when they failed to stop them at the
border. A senior police official said that
the situation in the border is now normal
and under control but the security
personnel have been deployed in the
border. It is learnt that a mediaperson
of Mizoram was also injured in the lathicharge.
It may be
m e n t i o n e d
here that tension
mounted
in Assam-Mizoram
border
last week after
the construction
of a waiting
shed at Kachurthal
of Assam
in the border
allegedly
by people
from Mizoram.
Assam Police
destroyed it
and a temporary
police check post was constructed
but it was also damaged by Mizoram people.
Deputy Commissioner Adil Khan
visited the area on Tuesday and took
stock of the situation.
Later, the Deputy Commissioner had a
telephonic discussion with the Deputy Commissioner
of Kolasib district of Mizoram, R
Zarzosanga and
brought to his
notice the attempts
made
by some organizations
from
Mizoram to
erect structures
in Kachurthal
area
within Assam's
territory.
Khan while
seeking the cooperation
of his
counterpart in
m ai n t ai ni n g
status quo
along the interState
border, invited him for discussion to
sort out any differences related to the inter-State
boundary amicably. At the same
time, Khan cautioned his counterpart that any effort of planned encroachment may
lead to serious law-and-order problem on
both the sides.
Khan thanked Zarzosanga for giving a
patient hearing and for his assurance of
looking into the matter in right earnest.
Khan also dashed off a letter to his Mizoram
counterpart requesting him to ensure
that no individual or organization take
law into their hands and create tension
among the people of these two States
which have been cohabiting peacefully for
many years. The MLA of Katlicherra, Suzam Uddin
Laskar sought the intervention of Chief
Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in the issue
of land dispute. After visiting the site, Laskar
alleged that about 2000 hectares of land of
Assam has been encroached by the members
of Young Mizo Association (YMA), Mizo
Zirlai Pawl (MZP) etc., organizations.-Assam Tribune
