The two day Indian Roads Congress (IRC) 215th Mid Term Council meeting was held at Mizoram University Auditorium with Union Minister of State for Road Transport & Highways Mansukh L Mandaviya as the Chief Guest.
The Union Minister opened the meeting and said that good roads gradually leads to greater development. He further added that the Central Government give importance to the needs of the region and promised a sanction of Rs 6000 crores for the construction of roads between Silchar to Tuipang.
The Minister said that the region is a fertile land where crops can be grown without employing chemical fertilizers, however,the region needs good market and greater road transportation.
The Guest of Honor Lal Thanzara graced the meeting and said that working days are shorter due to heavy monsoon rainfall and the young geological rock profile also pose a great hindrance to the construction of roads.
He further added that there are 800 villages connected by road under #PMGSY scheme. The railway construction is still undertaken and greater economy needs good road transportation, he said.
IRC President Krishna Reddy said that road accidents greatly affected economy and before preparing Detailed Project Report (DPR) for road construction, the issue of road safety must be taken into account. The Karnataka state witnessed lesser road accidents after road safety is given importance in the DPR.
The Program is attended by over 200 delegates all over the country including experts on roads construction, contractors and specialists. This is the third time Mizoram hosted the event including in the year 1997 and 2008.-AIR Aizawl
