Born on May 19, 1938, Lal
Thanhawla was brought up in
Zarkawt locality of Aizawl.
Lal Thanhawla joined the underground
Mizo National Front
(MNF) in 1966 after a brief stint
in government service.
In 1984 he became the CM,
but stepped down in favour of
Laldenga in 1986 to become
deputy CM after the latter
signed the Mizo Accord and
headed the interim government.
In 1989 Lal Thanhawla was
made CM for a second time.
He won the 1993 Assembly
polls and became the CM for
the third time.
He brought back the Congress
party to a landslide victory
in 2008 Assembly polls.
After his party won election
for two consecutive terms in
2013, he became the CM for
the fifth time, to be the longest
serving CM in Mizoram.-Assam Tribune
