AIZAWL, June 6: Aizawl
Bench of Gauhati High Court
today further stayed Mizoram
Government’s order for a new
road space rationing system,
following a PIL filed by Mizoram Bar Association (MBA).
“The High Court had earlier stayed the order till June
6. In the second hearing today, it stayed the order until
further notice,” a communiqué from MBA said.
According to the new
rules, any vehicle, with registration ending with 1 and 2 can
ply on Monday, 3 or 4 can on
Tuesday, 5 or 6 on Wednesday, number 7 or 8 on Thursday, and 9 and 10 on Friday.
The new rules were to come
into effect from June 1.
The MBA is against the new
rules as it “violates personal
liberty”. It argues that road
space rationing is not the solution to traffic congestion in
Aizawl. Introduction of more
dropping zones and lessening
of parking zones along the road,
and removal of shops selling
iron rods and cement and roadside hawkers are more effective measures to ease traffic
snarls, the MBA said.
In October, 2017, the erstwhile Congress Government
had introduced traffic rules for
rotational service of all vehicles in order to ease traffic
jams in Aizawl.
As per the rules, vehicles
were not allowed to ply on
days when their last digit of
registration number drew
similar to a particular date. For
example a vehicle, whose registration number ended with
1 could not move on date 1,
11, 21 and 31 of every month. ~ Assam Tribune
