The venue for the festival is set at Tuirial Airfield,an abandoned airstrip 21 Kms from the city centre. It is celebrated to showcase the diverse culture and traditions of the Mizos with a host of entertainment.
The origin of Thalfavang Kut reflects the close unit society and deep camaderie that knit the Mizos together wherever they are. Insurgency in the 1960̢۪s and 70̢۪s in Mizoram dislocated families from their homes, villages and towns. It disrupted education and students had to flee to neighboring states to continue their studies. Having to adjust to cultures completely different, haunted by tragedies back home and visions of lush green hills of their homeland taunted them. Thus, these students gave birth to ThalfavangKut. An annual festival held in their various places of study. They would get together, perform traditional dances, sing folk songs, share their experiences, encourage each other and at the end of the day share a feast.
Today, Thalfavang Kut is celebrated with a plethora of activities, games, music etc. Other activities include exhibition of handlooms and handicrafts, traditional dances and music, performances by well-known artistes and bands, carnivals, local cuisines, etc to name a few. The main highlights of the festival is Hot Air Ballooning, Paraglyding and Powered Hang Glider not found anywhere in the north east except Mizoram. The annual MIMSA Motor Sports racing takes place during the festival.

Situated in Tachhip about ... kms from Aizawl is a roughly-hewn gravestone about 12 feet in height erected to the memory of Sibuta, chief of the Palian clan. The stone stands more as a grim reminder of the inhuman deeds of the chief who had his step-mother ritually killed with a spear in place of a bull mithun as part of the ceremony of a Khuangchawi community feast. Sibuta was the son of a chief's concubine and had an elder step-sister, Darlalpuii, who was the daughter of the chief's wife. It is said that when he was young, his step-sister used to harass and punish him and he had sworn to take revenge. So when Sibuta grew up and later became a powerful and dreaded chief, he performed this gruesome act in the presence of his subjects who, out of fear, could not but take part in the ceremony. He was also known for many other cruel acts, but much to the relief of his people he did not live long and died soon after he killed Darlalpuii. At the time this memorial stone was erected by his men, it is said that one slave was buried alive beneath it.

World's Largest Family - Baktawng, Aizawl District

Recorded in the Guinness Book of World Record as the Worlds Largest Family, the joint family is headed by Pu Ziona, who has 38 wives, 89 children and a large number of grandchildren. A total of 162 members of the family live in a four-storied building called 'Chhuanthar Run' or Home of the New Generation in Baktawng village 70 kms from Aizawl.
Some of the family members of Ziona pose for a group photograph in Baktawng village in Mizoram, in this October 7, 2011 file photo. Ziona is the head of a religious sect called "Chana," which allows polygamy and was founded by his father Chana in 1942. Ziona has 38 wives, 89 children and a large number of grandchildren.
Living as a religious community, the family owns jhums, orchards, furniture workshops, manufactures aluminium utensils and are known for their self- sufficiency, craftsmanship, hardwork and entrepreneurship skills.
Originally known as 'Khuangtuaha Pawl', a breakaway group of the Presbyterian Church, the religious sect came into being on June 12, 1942 after Khuangtuaha, the founder was evicted from Hmawngkawn village by the village chief. Christian missionaries at that time felt that the theology of Khuangtuaha who believed in the use of drums as an instrument of worship was too liberal and dangerous. After the death of Khuangtuaha they renamed themselves 'Chana Pawl'. They still observe June 12 every year as ''Bawkte Kut' or 'Festival of the Hut' to commemorate the eviction and birth of the sect.
Chana, who inherited the baton from his late brother Khuangtuaha believed in polygamy and that God permitted him to marry as many wives as he could feed. After Chana died on 27th February, 1997, the leadership of the sect was taken over by his eldest son Ziona, who reportedly has more wives than his father.
The members of this religious community do not mind being called a religious sect because they take pride in nurturing the legacy of 'Lalpa Kohhran' (The Lord's Church) founded by their godfather Chana in 1966. The administration of the religious community is so complete that besides the religious aspect of the unit, the 'Lalpa Kohhran Family' have their own school called Chhuanthar Students Home (Class V to Class X) and a playground they call Chhuanthar Stadium.
Their way of life can be experienced by staying with them at their guest house in Baktawng village.

Mr. Ziona, who heads the ‘Chana’s sect’, has 38 wives, 89 children and a large number of grandchildren.

From 1959 to 2004

The Mizo married his first wife in 1959 at the age of 15 and the last one in 2004 when he was 60. The total, 162 family members occupy a four-storey house called ‘Chhuan Thar Run’ or New Generation Home. The village has become a major tourist attraction in the State because of the family.
